I think property crime is out-of-control. It is worse than it should be, but it is likely a new norm. I know plenty of people who don't report certain property crimes: Vehicle break-ins, catalytic converters stolen, even burglaries were nothing or something that wasn't worth much was taken. Violent drug deals are out-of-control, but that is also a new normal for many larger cities.

Basically, take reasonable precautions with your items (alarm systems, security doors, don't leave important things in the vehicle, etc.) and don't deal in the black market and you'll likely never been a victim. I do think there are some things that one just can't do in certain neighborhoods, like go for a 2AM jog in certain areas. While this sucks, it is just how things are.

I've lived in and grown up in Indianapolis (almost 40 yrs old). The south side. I've never heard from anyone or any source that says the south side of Marion County is unsafe. Zip codes 46217, 46227 and 46237 in Perry Township are among the safest areas of Marion County. Never heard or experienced any different.

I grew up near the intersection of Meridian and Thompson Road in the 60s and 70s. That area continues to be unchanged for the most part, which seems sort of amazing to me. I was looking at property tax records recently and noticed that one of my former next door neighbors still lives in their home. That’s almost 50 years.

It’s still a very safe and stable area, as is much of the Southside south of I-465.

I have never felt unsafe in any part of Indy, ever. But I don't buy/sell drugs, have no gang affiliations, and I don't bother my neighbors (to my knowledge).

46217, 27 and 37 are bordered to the north by Troy Avenue which is about a mile north of 465

For the most part, yes. A lot of older communities, but well established and safe with good schools.
