The big problem is when they have an easy food source.

When I lived in Wisconsin they were the bane of golf courses, as they loved to eat the type of grass used for the greens. Not only would make a mess with their leavings, they chewed up the greens as well. I know of one course that hired a local falconer who would bring his birds out to hunt. While they wouldn’t hunt the geese, it made the geese uneasy enough with a couple of birds of prey hanging around that they would move on.

The worse part is that for geese that migrate, such as Canadian geese, they would simply plop down for the winter if there was a plentiful food source and overwinter in that location. While I’m no goose advocate, I felt sorry for them as often the people that would feed them in the fall wouldn’t come out nearly as often in the dead of winter, and the geese would starve to death and freeze.
