I was fired from my job 9 months ago after working there for 17 years. I didn't file for unemployment right away, because I thought I would land a job by now. Even though I just turned 63, I really don't look it, I still have the desire to keep working since I am still physically and emotionally able too. I have been on many many interviews, always leaving with a good impression, confidence is soared. I well qualified for most of them. I have lowered my standards tremendously. No one will hire me. Can I file for unemployment at this point even though I didn't right away? I am going broke, and becoming very despondent.
.
Thank You,

File, but your benefit will not be as much as if you had done so immediately upon losing your job.

And it's also dependent on whether or not your former employer wants to contest your claim...you said you were fired, so there's a possibility you may not be eligible.

Why would you not file right away even if you do expect to land a job quickly ?

This is money you're entitled to , a fund to which you yourself have contributed for many years. It's basically your money. Even if you got a new job in a week, who couldn't use a few extra hundred ?

Uh, no. The employer pays the unemployment tax, not the employee. This is not entitled to by the employee. If there was grounds for the termination, just move along....
