I may be taking a 3 month assignment in downtown Indianapolis. Since I've never been there before, I'm trying to scope out the best place to live. I like the city life ( nightlife, restaurants, music scene ) if it's not in a war zone. What is the area around IU like? Any recommendations on short term rentals? What is Riley Towers apartment like?

Also, it looks like there are a couple of parks on the river. Are these safe places to run and hang out? Eagle Creek Lake looks pretty cool - they even have a sailing club with racing. Are there cool places to live out there?

Any opinions would be appreciated! Thanks.

Downtown Indy is in no way a war zone. In fact it is pretty quiet. Lots of clubs, all the sporting arenas, big mall with movie theater, etc. All downtown surrounded by the office buildings. I live right downtown and walking is fine. I walk to work and hubby walks sometimes (he is about a mile from work). I think it is about that far to IUPUI and an easy walk.

Riley Towers is nice and well kept. You would walk to work and think of the savings. They have a shuttle so check that out too. It maybe a good benefit. They are the only business who religiously does snow plowing of their sidewalks and keeps the grass mowed. We have several coworkers who live there. Lilly people use it for transitional housing. Great views. Newly remodeled grocery a couple of blocks away which has anything you could need. Mass Ave. shops with Starbucks a couple of blocks away. Wide streets and sidewalks and well lit.

You could live at Eagle Creek but will commute every day for anything. If you lived downtown, you could drive to Eagle Creek when you want and choose other places like the Monon Trail to run. Monon runs from 10th downtown (5 blocks from Riley) to 146th somewhere in Carmel. Runs right thru Broad Ripple which would be fun place to stop. Broad Ripple is full of music, bars, restaurants, too.

Note: There was some issue of security on the canal downtown. Dont know if resolved but it is pretty quiet and out of view. I would not venture there after dark. But the rest of the places are fine.
