I am a permanent resident of Florida who works from home. I am considering purchasing a second home in Indiana that is worth much less than my Florida home that I would work from less than 183 days a year. My employer is based in Florida, I have a declaration of domicile, I own a home, vote, bank, have cars registered here (Florida) and would work from my home in Florida more than half of the year. I have read through the Indiana tax forms but have not been able to determine if I would be liable for Indiana income tax on my earnings for the time that I might be working from my Indiana property or at all. Also, would I be liable for Indiana taxes for the whole year or only the portion that I was working there if I did have a tax liability?

I do expect to consult a tax professional based in Indiana before I make any decisions. At this point I'm just trying to get an idea of what the situation is.

Anyone know a good tax preparer, CPA or tax attorney in the Indianapolis or Greenwood area that I might consult?

Thanks!

RM

My quick guess is that you would be liable for tax on the days you actually worked for an employer based in the state or worked physically in the state.

I went through a similar deal with TN (no tax) and VA (tax) a few years ago. I believe I was able to deduct the state income taxes paid in VA from my federal return.
