I'm moving to the Indy area soon and looking for an apartment. I don't want to be in the extreme bad areas of town, but otherwise, anywhere within 20 miles of Indy is fine with me. Outer towns would be fine, such as greenfield, plainfield, brownsburg, etc.

I am looking for a small, cheap apartment, either studio or 1 bedroom. I would love to have one with w/d hookups, but the price has to be right, so I am willing to do without this.

I am interested an anything up to $550 a month. I would love to hear first hand experience from those of you living in apartments now.

I don't know of any apartments first hand that will have rents of $550 or below. Sure there are some, but I haven't checked out any. Word of warning, in general, places with rents below $550 will be either in questionable neighborhoods and/or older apartments. Just be very careful and be sure to check them out in person before committing to anything

Van Rooy Properties is a good company to check out that may have an apartments within your price range in several different areas in Indianapolis: Van Rooy Properties-Better Rental Living-Indianapolis Apartments

If you're wanting to live in the suburbs, I recommend that you stay away from the north side of Indianapolis, because you will have trouble finding one bedroom apartments within your price range up there. The south side, east side and west sides will be cheaper than the north side.

If you are looking for a 1 bedroom under $550, these on the northside in good areas fit in your range:

Pickwick Place off of Ditch Road. The upstairs apartments with the lofts are nice, the downstairs ones are ok. They are good cheap, no frills apartments. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. Pickwick Place is what it is.

River Road Apartments are similar, but there are no lofts upstairs. I have only visited once; never lived there.

I doubt you are going to find anything else on the far northside in your price range that is worth living in.

However, as mj99 said; you will probably have more luck on the east, west, or south side of town.

River Road Court are in a very nice area of town, but those apartments are really run down and the people that have moved into those over the past few years have really not been of great quality. But the location is great

I have only wonderful things to say about North Haven - located N. of INdy - off of 96th and N. Gray Road - also behind Carmax. They are very well maintained, helpful marketing and repair staff and excellend ammenities. Great indoor gym with 1/2 basketball court and pool and jacquizi. However, the price will be higher. Another advantage - address gives you Carmel residence (great Monon Center), Library, yet also located just over the city line so great access to Indy.
We were in a 3 bedroom - so I do not know prices of 1 bedroom. Check it out on the net. Good luck

Check out Indianapolis Apartments - Stallard & Associates.

I currently pay $520/month for a 1 br in a not so great neighborhood but I moved from a great neighborhood downtown where I paid $475/month. Really wish I hadn't moved.
