Can anybody help me out here, I am planning on relocating to the Indy area and found a home for purchase around E 10th St & N Rural St area. The home is located on Eastern Ave. I just would like to know the real rundown of the area. I am young family man with one child. My child will start attending school in 2-3 yrs. Are the schools decent? I will be working in the Carmel area. How long is the commute? I plan on staying close to the city just because I am a City guy. I understand there is crime and violence everywhere, but is this area a safe place to walk at night with your spouse? Take your child for a walk or any other family oriented things? I also like the nightlife scene so I would like to know if this is the area to be in? Safety is a concern but the City lifestyle is a must? Thanks

Well; I know there have been attempts an investing in the area, and I know someone who lives a block away from the intersection off Oxford. There are some nice urban areas somewhat close to 10th and Rural; but the area right around 10th and Rural is not an area I would recommend. There is a lot of crime in the area; and you can probably do a lot better than the area right around 10th and Rural. Actually, you can definitely do better than 10th and Rural. There are so many stronger urban areas if that is what you are looking for. Holy Cross, Cottage Home, Fountain Square, Fletcher Place, Irvington is also nearby.

Anyway, the commute from 10th and Rural to Carmel is right about a half hour depending on which part of Carmel you are commuting to. I commute from Fountain Square to Castleton for work; and it is not so bad.

If you can avoid buying that house, do so.

Crime is high, public schools there stink.

Buy in Carmel, kill your commute.

If you MUST live in Indy.....check around 75th - 116th streets within a 2-3 mile radius on either side of Meridian.

I have to agree with all. One of the more dangerous areas is east of Woodruff and west of Emerson. Now there may be a few small pockets of improvement but the schools and the crime should keep you away. Investors have a different perspective.

Sorry.

(lived in Indy since 1978) and currently live right downtown. I would not walk around the area you mentioned.

I wouldn't live there - not safe. You are working in Carmel - you should live in Carmel. You say you like city life, well there are some areas of Carmel that have a slightly urban feel. Look in the downtown area, between Meridian and Keystone - at least take a look. If that isn't "city" enough for you then look in Broad Ripple.

The nightlife near 10th and Rural probably isn't the type of nightlife you as a family man is looking for - and no it isn't save at night or during the day for that matter.

Even living downtown you have to think about schools and unless you send your child to a private school IPS is horrible

Something to think about; living in the downtown area and commuting to the northside, you will be reverse commuting. Every day I wiz by people slowly creeping toward downtown as I speed on to Castleton with no issues. So, while the drive from a near downtown location to Carmel will be longer mileage wise; it won't usually be to bad traffic wise.

I wouldn't live anywhere near 911 N Rural Street or any other address in that area. The man that lives there goes in his front yard with AK47 and threatens cars that drive by! Points them at his computer screen...dances with them, which, in turn resulted in a negligent discharge in his living room.

I wonder if OP bought and held the property. Strong ROI considering the investment happening there.
