North of 56th is generally far better than south of it. The Oaklandon area seems to be pretty solid, and most of Lawrence (except south of Pendleton Pike) is stable with strong apartments.

I'm not sure what happened to the area from 30th Street to 46th, and from Post Road all the way to German Church, but it really seems to have gone downhill in recent years. My guess is the loss of industry in the 1980s and 1990s on the Eastside really hit this section hard; white flight was more a product of people leaving the region altogether rather than just moving farther out, and many of the apartment complexes became Section 8 or low-income rather quickly. The surrounding neighborhoods felt the influx of crime, homes demoted to rental units, and the result is a series of 1960s era housing that often already feels like slums. A real shame. I'm not from this side of town though; if anyone else has a better idea what happened here, feel free to pipe in. I'd love to know.

However, 56th and Post is still quite vibrant, the Fort Ben redevelopment looks great, and even in the area south of this (south Lawrence and north Warren Township) it appears some new developments are springing up, though not quickly.

How far is the Carmel area from DFAS?

Is it a reasonable driving distance?

Any good hotel suggestions?

I'm going to be on business here in a week or two and am completely unfamiliar with the area.

I recently accepted a new position with DFAS. I am looking for a safe place to stay in the next few weeks. My start date is February 16th. Please help me locate either a temporary and safe place or a short term lease. I will be moving from NC. Since i am not familiar with the area. I will welcome short distance of maximum 15-20 minutes driving distance.

Please reach out at your convenience.

Thank you.
