A lease is a binding legal agreement and there are few circumstances where you can break one without incurring some kind of penalty. My advice would be to see an attorney. If you can document and prove "crazy" on the part of your landlord (such as invasion of privacy, failure to maintain or repair your apartment, etc.), you might have a chance of breaking your lease without penalty, but that would be for a judge to decide. You may also want to have an honest heart to heart with the landlord or leasing agent if you just signed. They might cut you a break, but don't bet the farm on it.

I'm asking this on behalf of a relative who's been unemployed, and who's unemployment compensation will be ending. He has a lease until June, but wants to move out-of-state now. Can he leave without breaking the law?
