The personal details of 100 million Facebook users have been collected and published online in a downloadable file, meaning they will now be unable to make their publicly available information private.
I don't see what the huge risk here is, I mean after all, they only collected what could be collected.

You do not join one, shared information then expect privacy or security, it is never a sure thing.
I never understood why anyone would join a social networking site to connect and share info with others but try to be anonymous at the same time, just doesn't make sense.
The data that was collected was public, in an unprotected profile, anyone can get to it without this "published" info, if they weren't smart enough to protect it in the first place, oh well.

Or if you must have one, make sure your info isn't public as was the case here, granted with FB's privacy policies (or lack thereof) even that might not be good enough.

It's not just a 'social networking' site for many of us. I use it to make sure my offspring are alive and well, because we live in different parts of the country - very different. Some use it to keep track of certain groups they are part of. Some just don't have a life off of cyberspace.
It's not so much a matter of protecting your identity by not having an account as it is being careful what information you actually put on the account. Simply not having an account of FB is no protection at all, I've had a nutcase cyberstalker for over a decade back from the days of unmoderated newsgroups. Anyone who is reasonably computer literate can find whatever they want to know about you, even if you don't have a computer, forget access at all to the internet. If you want guaranteed safety, unplug your computer and unplug your internet connection. Better still, build a very high wall around your house.
