All search engines have bots, they will request pages and follow the links on pages. This allows them to index the content on a page for search results. This could also be called a "spider" because like a spider it will walk the web.

phpBB identifies the bots through their user agent string which is why you can see them listed in the online listing.

O.k. appreciate the explanation Coalman. So in other words it's an ''non lethal'' spyware created by Google that helps it's search engine work faster to connect to similar web sites of interest when we are doing a Google search?

Yes but there is no spyware about it, the bot is just downloading publicly available pages* for indexing. They do this on every site on the internet. For example this page has already been spidered by the Googles bot:

http://webcache.googleusercontent.co...23post16648337

In other words no bot, no Google results.

*A site owner can restrict what pages the bot downloads using a file called robots.txt.
