I live in a rural area that is surrounded by woods. I have directv as my cable provider and verizon as my cell phone provider. Now I need to get an internet provider. I am hoping that I can find an internet provider that does not require me to get a landline. I am not able to get most services like verizon FIOS in my area because there are no strong signals out here in the boonies. Is Wild Blue a good option? Or would I be better off adding a landline and getting a dial-up internet service? I am also hoping that I can find something that won't cost much more than $50 a month. Any suggestions?

yes wild blue is an internet provider by satellitelite they suck both them and hugesnet if you can get a good dial up connection you will be better off. they never deliver the speeds they promise and as soon as it rains be prepared to get bumped offline and if you go over your bandwith be prepared to get bumped down to dial up speed. hopefully your not a gamer and or downloader of a music service like napster or rapsody that will chew your bandwith right up!!

Rural landlines are commonly VERY bad for dial-up. Ours runs no more than 1/2 56K speed at best. You are also dreaming if you think you'll get total costs under $50/mo.

Hughesnet has its own bird now, which is a good thing. However, download speeds mid-day can still be as low as twice a good dial-up speed for many of us. If the installer is good, most rain is no longer the problem it used to be. Heavy snow does need to be brushed off the dish though, so go with a pole mount on the ground. Latency is a problem as ganto mentioned. Any large downloads MUST be done in the free period between 2 AM and 6 AM eastern time or you hit the fair access limitations.

You may want to check out this company: Affordable & Reliable Dial up Internet Services Provider | Copper.net
A friend of mine has used it for years and they have good, reliable service.

In this case, you'd need to add the landline, but you could possibly get DSL + the landline for under the amount you mentioned.
That is....if they serve your area. I'd think it'd be worth a check.

Will a satalite provider work if my house is surrounded by tall trees? I can't see much of the sky from my house.

You might need to cut one or two down. The angles vary according to your location, but are fairly high up. FWIW, around here, a situation like that is asking for a tree trunk to land in your lap during a tornado. Last year, a fellow was crushed by not one but TWO trees while sitting in his home.
