I can't believe this happened. I had a really good password 2 words and 4 numbers and my account stopped working on Friday after 7 years... I couldn't log in. I was about to ask the the password to be sent to my alternative account and noticed the alternate email address had been changed.
I notified MS and asked them to freeze the account. I was able to give them my alternate address, my last passwords and also the last emails as they are stored on my mac. however they haven't done it or looked at the problem because of high demand.....
Today is now Monday and the account is still active. whoever it was sent emails to all my address book asking for money ( on behalf of me ) for a friend who needed emergency treatment in hospital.
This morning a friend emailed me a whole conversation he had with the hacker over MSN. I just can't believe the cheek.

MS have made me so angry in their lack of dealing with this. why couldn't they just freeze the account until they could verify it wasn't me..... which would be as easy as looking at the begging email sent out !!!

<shrug> I never use the address book there, and strip out the mail regularly. I guess somebody could hack it, but it wouldn't be worth much. Important mail goes to a different address and a text only mail program.

Smile hotmail

My hotmail was hacked recently. Give the Windows Live Mail team a few days to sort it out and they should send you a password reset link to your alternate email address that you provided in your request for help.

Oh man, I can totally see getting even the tech savvy ones getting burned by this. Don't the phishing filters built in or add as a plug-in to most popular browsers catch this?

I love how -slowly but surely- Internet is becoming a thing that I want to avoid.

Today is June 20, 2011 and my hotmail is still not working. I'm not a big fan of hotmail and will probably discontinue it's use. However, I cannot access the place where I can close the account. I kept hotmail this long probably out of sheer laziness.

I can log in but I cannot access a single thing. Does anyone know specifics about this or how to fix, or if they're going to fix it? Is this a bigger problem or is it just a few?

The only thing I need from it are all the addresses so I can transfer them to my other email. I agree with the OP that I learned a lesson but not a lesson I like.
