The significant reduction of postal service could have a significant impact on Internet shopping. I have followed the tracking of percels in the past, and quite often, the chain looks a lot like this:
1. Turned over to Fed Ex for shipping.
2. Fed Ex took it down to the post office and mailed to the Fed Ex office here.
3. Mailman brought package to local Fed Ex office.
4. Fed Ex truck brought it to my house.

If USPS service is significantly cut, even parcels sent by UPS or Fed Ex would be delayed by a day or two, unless those companies hired the 25,000 laid off postal workers and put them to work delivering their own packages.

It is bad enough now. I just tracked a shipment I'm expecting:

Date Time Location Event Details
December 7, 2011 08:11:51 AM Toledo OH US Arrival Scan
December 6, 2011 08:39:00 AM US Shipment has left seller facility and is in transit.

It's now 2:30 pm December 8. It took the USPS 24 hours to recognize that they had a package anbd scan it, and now almost two days later, they haven't moved it an inch.

What do you see in the future of on-line purchase shipping?

Maybe couriers and private delivery companies, like in other countries?

At one time , in the 1970's I think, there was a private startup company that tried to take some of the UPSP business for mail away from the Gov't.

UPSP shut them down almost overnight claiming that NO ONE else had the right to deliver mail in the U.S..

Could it be that now mail too will get outsourced?????

You mean all mail gets flown to India to be sorted, and then flown back in neat zip-sorted bundles? It could work. The Indian sorters live on the plane. The post office dumps the loose mail into the cargo hold. The plane refuels in India, and the sorters work on the plane both ways. They sleep a few hours while the plane is refueling, unloading and reloading in New York. They can work for a few dollars a day anywhere the plane is not in US air space or any other country that regulates wages.
