Hi, Wondering if having a forum can make me money. I was on a forum where people were talking about hits on a Yahoo ad and each hit made the forum owner .10 cents each. I wonder what does it take to set-up and run a forum? Can people make 10,000 or 20,000 dollars a year with a forum?

It can but it is very hard. I did once a long time ago but no longer do. As for IPS, they are crooks who now operate a now "honest business".

Thousands of people participated in their idea of starting a free PHP message board and did a lot of free work for them. When it got off the ground, they "stuffed it" to everyone else and became a paid product. I would not have helped, beta tested, made suggestions for several years to make a free product they claimed they have been developing had i known they would "stuff it" to all of the "helpers".

I admin a site that draws well from Google ads and text-based advertising. I don't own it, but if I did the income would be very handsome - as it is I just get a little slice. Actually static content generates the revenue, on the forums ppl seem to ignore ads.

And ditto the comments on IPS. They are complete and total crooks. Matt Meacham and his crew have changed their licensing terms several times, and each time they stick it to their loyalists. When is a perpetual license not a perpetual license? When it's purchased from IPS, and they decide to screw everyone. Check out phpBB or vBulletin.

I used IPB when it was free also and was gutted when they charged fees. IMO PHPBB3 is much better.

You can get a vB and put some Google ads on there and sell Ad Space as well. On the other hand, your forums have to be really popular to start hauling in good amounts of cash.
