This topic may have been covered but I can't find it. I would like to watch either old tv shows (mostly documentaries) or a good movie from my laptop but view it on the tv.
My husband just got a long cable that will reach. Do I need to buy a Roku or something? We rarely even look at tv or movies but just for once in a while is there a safe site where we might find something worthwhile to watch? For free.

There are several options including a converter for old TVs that goes from the laptop audio and video monitor outputs to RCA in on the TV (poor quality). Most plasma/LED/LCD TVs have a PC Video Monitor input, as well as HDMI and
USB. The best method is HDMI but the typical laptop won't have that. Oddly, I can connect my Android to the TV via HDMI and watch movies/TV but not my laptop.
It's an ethernet connection on the tv and there is one on the laptop--that's what I was just told. Knowing that, is there a way to get something from the laptop and watch it on tv?
What kind of TV is this? How old/new is it? Have you used the remote to access the TV interface to see if it has options to 'Hook TV to PC', or 'to DLNA Device', or something that gives you the option to do something besides change channels.

I don't think this is what she's asking. She just wants the display on her computer outputted on her TV.
If the computer and TV both have HDMI ports then all you'll need is an HDMI cable. If not, then there are appropriate video cables and adapters you can get to hook them up. More info about your TV and computer is needed.
The tv is about five years old and it can be connected to a computer. The computer has a slot that is not a UBS slot--we have a cable that goes into it at one end and goes to the tv at the other end. I'll see if I can get more information. Thank you.
