It will occasionally run into a glitch. Give it a few mins and try again. If it persists, reboot, it might be your isp or computer.

Every site has issues....sometimes you just happen to hit them at the exact right min. Liz

I've found that some days (rare) gmail doesn;t work as well in IE but will work in Firefox. If you don't have FF, I suggest you install it as a just in case.
