I realize that this can cause issues, but it's really nothing new. ISP's have been doing this for years.

I had a .RR account for a bunch of years as a Road Runner customer. When I left for FiOS I of course lost the account.

About 3 months after I closed my RR account, I was able to get the email back via my work RR account (FiOS wasn't available there, so we stuck with RR).

See this thread for a discussion on the results of Yahoo's recent attempts to recycle email addresses.

I'm aware of that one, and it's implications, just pointing out that IPS's have been doing it for years.

If you abandon an email address, or cancel an account somewhere, this is what happens.

Yahoo gave users that weren't using old accounts (myself included) the opportunity to keep them.

why exactly is this stupid? It's stupid for someone not to sign into their email account for 270 days...

A link to a link inside of forum thread. It talks about Yahoo, not Microsoft. Two different companies. Nice try. It seems people overuse the word "educate yourself," when it has nothing to do with educating, but wasting time on their own opinion, like a Glen Beck of the tech world.

I don't see why people leave themselves open to this vulnerability. Why would you leave loose ends open on an account that you no longer use?

Nice to see you completely missed the point
Can't say I'm surprised though...

I still see no issue with Microsoft nor Yahoo on reissuing abandoned email accounts. It is the responsibility of the account holder to make sure all of their banking info, Facebook, and whatever else is not still tied to that abandoned email account.
