The articles refer to Chrome version 21. The current version is 30. Firefox, Chrome, and Opera all support this feature. You are required to give the browser explicit permission in order for it to use your camera. If you disable your camera, the browser will not be able to detect it.

This is going to be a w3c standard, so all browsers will support it at some point.

A piece of electrical tape solved it for me. I just checked and it's disabled. Guess I'm safe!
