Is there any simple way to change it back aside from creating a new account? I would like to keep the gmail address it's attached to and would like to only change the YouTube name and not all the Google services that are attached to it.

Google wants to make YouTube comments less anonymous, not more so. They're not going to support what you're wanting to do.
