Personal router with Verizon FIOS worth it? (games, modem, wifi)

I'm thinking of getting Verizon Fios when I move into my new apartment building. I'm wondering if its worth the hassle to purchase and use my own router to go with the modem/router combo that Verizon supplies.
I can see that there's an additional charge of around $5 to rent out Verizon's own router for FIOS service. That's about $60 per year. I can probably get a decent router for the same price or little bit more and take it with me when I leave.
My rationale is that I may only be staying at new apt for a year and then relocating somewhere else. That new destination may not have FIOS capability, so I would be able to take my own router with me when I move and I wouldn't have spent the extra $5/month for renting Verizon's router.
I would be getting FIOS internet and TV service. I play alot of computer games/playstation, stream movies occassionally, and have wifi devices like ipads.
I've heard that there may be problems with setting up a personal router to work with Verizon's modem/router unit and wonder if its really worth the hassle of doing so. Maybe I should just pay the extra charge and use only Verizon's equipment. I'm not an IT or computer specialist so if the process involves too many steps, I would probably screw it up or something..
Can anyone shed some light on this? Is it worth using your own router vs just going with what verizon provides and paying a fee to "rent" their router?
Some routers only are 100mbit but FIOS overs over 100mbit service, so make sure you get the right one.
