Is it just me or is does it seem like every website is selling out and producing poor/irrelevant/downright stupid content for the sake of views? Instead of producing a few high quality and useful articles a day, website rather churn out 50 incredibly dumb articles a day. Are they trying to attract millennials (most of which either don't know how to read or don't care for substance) or is it something else? Even "Smart" websites skewed to specific demographics are selling out for crap. What is UP with Business Insider posting a stupid article about Kim Kardashian's ugly new hair? I thought we had crappy sites like Buzzfeed and Yahoo News to write about all that stupid stuff, but now we have niche sites covering trash too.
When you take a look at the demographics of Buzzfeed readers, you quickly realize who these people who "don't know how to read or don't care for substance are". It's women. According to Quanticast demographics statistics, it's primarily SINGLE women, without college degrees (split between those who have no college experience and those with some college experience). So a good question is why do single women with low intellect demand such low quality content. You're probably on to something when you say they don't know how to read and don't care for substance. It's worth noting that the demographics point heavily to single women, and only moderately to people without college degrees.

Yes, the quality of content is starting to seem like it's going down hill on many sites. Even the big websites are doing it. They just want to have as many pages published as possible to try to bring in more visitors.
Google, Bing and the other major search engines say that they are going to rank websites using content quality as a ranking factor but I haven't really seen it happening in the top search results. Many websites are putting up articles/stories/posts that have maybe 200 words, which is rather small for a good quality article/story/post.
Many sites just seem to be doing copy and paste content publishing, so they all seem to look like the same article, but with a few added or subtracted words.
Yep, it's the dumbing down of America...literature has morphed into "content" on most web sites. It's all about page views and nothing to do with edification or illumination.
But now we all know the color of our souls or what kind of dog we were in a previous life.
I think it's interesting that some legit news websites have those news links down at the bottom of the page that looks like they would take you to some scam site or porn site.

Yes, this is very true. Many websites both big and small just seem to find an article somewhere else and just re-post it on their site with only minor changes (if any). Finding a good website that has 100% unique content is rare.
I got so fed up with seeing the same, almost exact articles on so many different websites with nothing different to add that I started my own site with only unique content. This is one reason I did it, out of frustration of seeing the same exact thing everywhere I went.
It would be nice to see different things on different sites. The same topic/info would be ok but at least write it in your own words and maybe present it a little different than everyone else. At least maybe present the info with a different twist on it or add something to it (more than just a word or two).

You should also note that buzzfeed is read mostly in school, probably to kill the time when bored...
Is that demographic reliable? Alexa gathers it data from adware and data sources that it refuses to name, while quantcast gathers it data from scripts invoked by the site owners themselves (similar to New relic RUM scripts)

Neilsen. David Tinnes at Nielsen is will be able to provide demographics on news sites (including buzzfeed).

The publishing/media industry is going through a significant change. It used to be about who can cover the most topics and write the most articles. As a result, these companies kept a large staff of writers. But, now, it's all about who can tell the story in the best way.
A good example of a paper that is moving in this direction is WSJ. Yes, they always had good quality pieces, but they're doing some amazing stuff now... with the help of emerging technologies on the web.
It's not about the quantity of content anymore. These traditional news sites are now focusing on the quality of content. As a result, they don't need as many journalists as they had in the past. They only need to keep the high quality ones.
