This is true in about 4% of cases. Seriously. If you get blatant spam about buying Cialis or Viagra, yea... you probably don't want to click ANY link in the email. Common sense people. But most UNSUBSCRIBE me emails from legit places are truly that...unsubscribe links. Let's not make everyone paranoid to ever click UNSUBSCRIBE.

A friend was getting inundated with spam because she was always signing up for contests with her emai. I showed her how to start unsubscribing. Using that within a month her spam intake dropped by 90%.
Yes, good point. Let me clarify that I'm not clicking unsubscribe to just anything. It's to legit stores that somehow have my information. The viagra, cialis, hey sexy wanna chat emails go to my spam and I do not touch them.

To be fair, that's not spam (it's not unsolicited), and for those I totally agree. Anything that you subscribed to (accidentally or otherwise) should be unsubscribed to normally.

But truly unsolicited spam messages, I wouldn't click any link in it.

From the OP's message, it wasn't clear if they had "obtained" his email legitimately or not.

Disagree Skunky. The initial "I agree to let you email me" entry for the contest is one thing... but when you don't read the 25 page terms and miss that one line that says "and we will give your email address to the 50 other member companies we are partners with".... THAT is Spam. You may have clicked I AGREE, but it is unwanted email.

While I do agree that it's unwanted, and evil, and that the senders should be burned at the stake, she still agreed to it (and should have known better ).

From a strictly technical standpoint, you can't get those advertisers added to an RBL as they are technically not both Unsolicited and Bulk (the requirements to be Spam).

No matter how underhanded or shady the method used to get the agreement is, the recipient agreed to receive the email.

Or someone who dislikes them put their email address all over the net for fun and agreed for them.

Bumping my thread because I got a great one today.

I clicked "unsubscribe" link in an email.

Took me to a page with bunch of radio buttons and i unchecked them all and hit confirm. And it said, thanks for signing up!

I looked again and the text before the radio buttons was a double negative "Check all boxes that you wish to no longer not receive notifications for".

Another thing I sometimes do when signing up on certain sites is to use a free Ten Minute email service.

The emails self-destruct in ten minutes. Some of these sites will offer you more time, if needed.
