I maintain a facebook account but use it sparingly, and sometimes go to check my settings only to find that things I once marked private are now public! Also, there are contacts in my email and phone log who I never keep in touch with and have purposely NOT synched with facebook, yet many of those people have been appearing as "friend suggestions" for me on fb. This creeps me out. Let's educate ourselves & all acquaintances about why we need to stop using facebook.
I just discovered Seen.is and Unseen.is as ethical alternatives to facebook. From their site:
"Welcome to Seen - Social media with privacy
Our flagship site, Unseen (unseen.is) is a great place to keep your private things to yourself and the people you want to share with.
If you'd like to be a bit more public about things, we now have Seen (seen.is).
Seen works a lot like that other very famous and popular social networking site where you can see people's Faces, but we don't have such heavy-handed demands on your privacy.
We're hosted in Iceland and subject to their very protective privacy laws.
Join Now - it's free!
There's no filtering of your news to your friends. No censorship (other than Terms of Service for bad things like pornography, which we don't allow).
We don't require any ID, phone number, etc, like some of the other sites are starting to do.
You can choose the level of privacy that you're comfortable with. If you want to fill in your real name and where you live in our signup screens, you can. That way, classmates and friends can find you if you want to be found. But it is not a requirement.
We do not support ourselves by selling our customers' data.
We think you will like that, and if you do, we hope you will tell your friends about us, too."
There are currently 140k+ registered users, so let's stand for ethics & privacy rights, and spread the word about this new social media option. Facebook is an unethical, personal info-sharing corporation. Let's spread the word about unseen.is and seen.is. It's what facebook originally purported itself to be before facebook began sharing all our info.
Hmmm... I looked into it and I am NOT impressed.
They use closed source "home-grown cryptography". What the heck is that? What exactly are they using?
With closed source you have no idea what the code does, how the cryptography is implemented, or whether it's doing what it advertises at all.
Second: you get less security on a free account. A free account, Unseen would generate and store your private key. Seriously???
So, how much less is it for those who don't want to pay?

*Sigh* Ok then. Well I discovered seen.is through a near-genius acquaintance of mine. He's highly educated and highly informed, so I really want to be able to trust his recommendation to eschew facebook and go to seen.is, if dependent on social media. If NOT dependent on social media, best to just leave it all alone.

Um, yeah. Not a chance in Hell.
