So the thing is I was at this local sci-tech meetup and I was doing small talks with users and was starting to click well. The group organizer seemed to be away for a while and there been no new meetups.

Then out of the blue I got this annoying warning from meetup management saying this is my last warning regarding solicitation and so on.

So I took a deeper look at the policies and they bar stuff like business promotion and solicitation of any sort.

I mean how stupid is this. I happened to find a good place where I share common interest with the users and the group’s dead and didn’t look like it was going to have any meetup any time soon.

And one point is meetup rsvp are not really reliable in term of the user showing at meetup. I find it much more reliable to message the user and small talk and see where that goes. And meetups are limiting cuz you only meet people who show but if you message user on group roster, you can reach more that way.

Anyone feel their policies against solicitation annoying and ridiculous? I find my messaging way much more practical for finding compatible users.

In contrast, facebook doesn’t penalize you in any way messaging people. It’s just facebook isn’t organized as neat as meetup so it is harder to find interest groups.

Anyone know social site alternatives that are free to use plus organized as neat as meetup without penalization for text talking to users?

The policy is perfect.
People are looking to meet over common interests, not to be spammed and pestered and solicited.
Bear in mind: You got gigged because you annoyed people and someone complained. As they should.

It is primarily a social function, not an advertising venue for every business operator, and that is the basis for the policies.

well if i were spamming that is a different story. i was asking people their background and gotten good response. and that leads to small talk.

if they taken a closer look ....the system failed then.

why i need to go to meetup when i can do the same thing on facebook without any hassle? the only problem on facebook is things aren;t organized as neatly...

Choices, choices.

Abuse Meetup.com or use an inferior venue like Facebook.

Again... Someone complained, so you did something to spur a complaint.

Well, if it's against policy, it's against policy. They have their reasons for no solicitation. It's to protect the other users and to keep their site's integrity intact.

Look at it this way. If everyone at meetup events used them as an opportunity to sell, would there be any time left for the event?

Former Meetup Organizer here.

If you found a meetup group that you had a common interest with other members and saw there was nothing posted, why not post a actual event if this group was so important to you? It's hard being an Organizer if no one else will be willing to post a meetup. A reason I made sure I had co-organizers, event organizers, and members who could easily post an event suitable for our meetup group.

Each group is run as they see fit, and a organizer can make rules. Meetup also has their rules that must be abided by.

Many groups have had members join their group, just to try and to promote their business with no intention of actually wanting to participate in that particular meetup. It's total SPAM and members will alert organizers right away when this happens. And, there are some creepy people who join meetup and then start harassing people for one reason or another.

It seems that members of the group you were in complained. There is no way Meetup would know otherwise unless there are complaints, whether it was directly sent to meetup, or the organizer got complaints. The Organizer(s) can remove any member as they see fit.

If you were trying to solicit business through meetup, or the members in the group you were in, you should have chosne to be a Sponsor of the group. If you had something to say outside an actual Meetup, you could have posted it for anyone to see on the forum for that meetup group.

FB may be of better help to you. I don't know what kind of rules they have on FB because I loathe the idea of FB and refuse to bother with it. As far as my knowledge, there is nothing that comes close to Meetup out there.
