Okay, I understand that Facebook knows that if A knows B and if A and C are friends, B might know C. At least this appears to be the basis of many notifications I receive that I might know C.

Now I received a notification that I might know...a cousin with a different surname. As far as I am aware we have no mutual friends, contacts. interests, activities, or employers.

Where or how might FB get the idea I might know this person?

p.s. not sure which (sub)forum is best for this post...perhaps might be time for a Social Media (sub)forum?

That person could have searched for and found you.

If that person has ever received email from you and they let Facebook have access to their email Inbox, Facebook would know of their connection to you.

You may have a mutual friend that neither of you might never even think about or be aware of.

Facebook can read your phone list if you use mobile app.

to use the facebock app you have to give permission for them to upload your contact list to their server in l.a.

they probably sort|uniq each list to grep out matching fone numbers/addresss.

when i first logged into facebock, it suggested 10 names/profile pictures:
4 were friends; 4 were parents/friends of friends i met once or twice; and 2 were complete strangers.

I sometimes wonder this too. As you said, some people that were in my "people you may know" were understandable but certain others would make me wonder how FB knew I might somehow know them since as you said, the connection to each other would be much less obvious.

I get suggestions on that banner they force on me that I can absolutely guarantee you I have no connection whatsoever with.

It's the FB version of phishing.

I get lots of suggestions of people half my age I've never met, most of whom are either friends of my offspring or friends of my nieces and nephews. It makes me doubt that Facebook's friend-suggesting algorithm is putting much effort into likely connections when it ignores age differences like that.

I got one for a big guy in Russia sitting behind a bottle of vodka and shirtless. WTH? I noticed it said one mutual friend and it was a nephew who is into weightlifting. Considering their size I'd guess they lift in the same weight class.

You never know.

The ones on the right side are sometimes interesting. Every so often I get one for a beautiful young lady that doesn't like to wear much clothing.

I fixed this problem by rarely using facebook, and using it only to lurk. Knowing that everything I do on facebook is tracked, entered into a dabase, mixed with other info sources and such, in order to monetize my life rather creeps me out. Yes, Google acts similarly, but does not have the same exposure to my likes, dislikes, comments and such.
