We live in a really rural area where there are very few options for internet/cable. We've had CenturyLink for almost 2 years now,but due to financial problems fell behind on bills now they're sending shutoff notices all the time unless I pay the up to $900 bill. Of course I don't have that and live paycheck to paycheck, and am sending what I can...even been talking to them on a regular basis 'negotiating' payment plans but they just won't cut down the amounts at all. Even though their scripts tell the reps to 'thank for being a long time customer',well why don't you cut me a break then? And it seems the charges keep creeping up...but then they're also under scrutiny for inflated charges.

One option would've been to bag out of them and go with Dish Network, the only competition here. You get the introductory rates but it would take awhile for the charges to creep up again.I realize now that it was mistake to 'bundle',because now I can't go with separate companies until the bill is paid down...which it never is because we still have service with them. The worst part of it is the internet...the only other option is satellite internet like Hughes or Exede, and I've seen nothing but mostly negative reviews of them.

And I can't get rid of these things because the wife is home bored all the time and can't live without the things...so what can I do about internet?

I don't really see what choice you have. Satellite isn't bad. Anyone else in town have satellite? Man, you do live in a small town. Looks beautiful!

Dump them and send your wife to the library. I'm sure they not only have computers they also have things like books and videos. No new charges gives you time to pay off the existing charges ands start over.

There's no magic way out for those that don't pay their bills except for bankruptcy. Even that doesn't work for most. Cable TV is a luxury, not a necessity. Go get a good TV antenna. You may need to give up ESPN.

Give up cable and CNN. Start watching your local HS teams.

I agree with getting an antenna...free TV is a good thing.

Cable isn't a necessity, it's a luxury.

If you have good enough internet speed, say 5 gigs down or so cancel cable tv. Just pay for internet only and buy a video streaming device. Thirty dollars or so will get you a decent one. I have disliked cable company's and their crappy business practices for years. I cut off cable a few years ago, and I"m happy. I have four apps on my Roku box Netfilx, Amazon Prime, Hulu+, and Youtube Red. I don't know the exact cost, but it's no more than about forty dollars a month, and you might be fine with fewer of them than I have.

Comcast, here, does not sell internet only packages, or if they do, it's the same price as with basic cable tv. The tv portion is not needed, but the internet access is needed.

Good for them. Like I said, it costs the same, or virtually the same, as it does with basic TV included.
