I've been trying to stream some of the Canadian Olympic trials this week on ESPN3. Unfortunately, it has been locking up frequently. I've checked everything on my end and have even chatted with the people at ESPN. They don't know what the problem is and neither do I. Oddly, when I watch the same event on their website in a delayed manner (after the event has occurred), it doesn't seem to lock up.
Is there a difference in the manner in which something streams live vs. "recorded"?
Choppy video can be caused by two main things, there is choke point for the data (e.g. slow internet) or your computer is not powerful enough to decode it.
When something is LIVE there are generally more people watching it. If the provider isn't up to the task, this can certainly cause buffering. Not something ESPN would readily admit.
I have always suspected what Peregrine suggests. I rarely have been able to tap into live web events successfully (partly, I think, because the satellite latency tosses me to the bottom of the pile).

What speed is your internet?
Those are both things that would impact both live streaming and streaming a recorded event. That isn't the case.

I tend to think you are probably right. Another thing I noticed with this event is that it came from TSN in Canada, through ESPN who added commercials, and then somehow, commercials for the local area (in my case Cleveland) got added. I gotta think all that touching and altering the signal has to impact things, too.

Only when you are making an apples to apples comparison where both sources are using the same codec, same bitrate, same resolution.
