I have an old NETGEAR Cable Modem CM500 and I've had it for 4 years now. Yesterday and today, my modem has restarted a few times and it has interrupted my work from home, which is not good. I've called my cable company and they are not aware of any issue on their side. But then again, my cable company doesn't have the best reputation of being honest, lol

Is there a chance my cable modem is starting to fail and that I need to buy a new one? I hate to act hasty and presume it's my modem and then spend the money on a new one when I didn't have to.

You don't mention the name of your provider. The first thing I would do is verify that your current provider still supports your current modem. They should have a list of supported modems on their web site.

I had a similar issue with Comcast last year. The modem that had been supported by Comcast was suddenly dropped from their list of supported modems. It was not that the modem failed, but, that Comcast no longer supported the old software. I had to look at the new approved list of modems and buy a new one.

It's RCN, now known as Astound. I will have to check if they have a list somewhere of what modems they support.

Most providers will give a list, but it doesn't always mean that a unit not on the list won't work (unless they specifically call out a certain model).

Has anything changed as far as placement of yours that may have affected ventilation, etc.? Electronic devices that are powered on 24/7 (including power supplies) can start to act up and ultimately stop working when a very small component inside of them fails, and overheating can speed this up quite a bit.

You could try to disconnect the power and any cables plugged into it, wait a few minutes and then plug everything back in where it was to see it it makes a difference.

The three times I've had significant connectivity issues, the provider wants to blame the wifi router but then it boiled down to a out-of-date modem. The last time I upgraded to the provider's highest-recommended unit it was like I had a whole new world.

That link did not have a comprehensive list. I did find this link tho...

https://approvedmodemlist.com/wave-approved-modems/

I did try to unplug and plug the modem back in. The problem hasn't happened again since. So I'll continue to observe over the next few days. If it happens one more time, I will have to run out and buy a new modem as I don't want to risk completely losing internet one day.

I'll look into getting the ARRIS SB6190. According to that link above and from google searching, it's definitely compatible with Astound. It's only a DOCSIS 3.0, but I will never ever need a 1 Gbps internet plan. So a DOCSIS 3.1 just seems unnecessary to spend money on.

I assume you use a separate router and not a combo modem/router unit?

Nope, no splitter. It's one dedicated connection.

Anyways, I haven't the problem again since I started this thread, so maybe it was just a one time hiccup or maybe my cable company was doing some urgent updates. But I'll continue to observe.
