Our Google Fiber router/wifi is in a closet in the laundry room. There is no way to move it out of there. The signal needs to pass through walls and doors.

Our laptops are getting full speed. However, our tablets and smart phones have a weaker signal, getting worse when you get farther away from the router. The single biggest problem is when we use our smart phones for making phone calls using the wifi. Our house is so well insulated that standard 4G service is barely functional. (We're not the only ones. Ride around our neighborhood and you'll see people on their front porch chatting on their cell phones.)

Our house is small - 2000 sq ft ranch. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on this, nor am I capable of running ethernet cables.

We already get 100mbps from Google Fiber, and they are bumping it to 500mbps in February. We are not heavy users - two retired folks cruising the internet and playing on our phones and tablets. We stream a little, and only occasionally get buffering.

I've been told that Google mesh would fix this if I got several boxes. I'm not thrilled with the price, but TP Link makes one that is affordable. I've also looked at powerline wifi extenders which are around the same price as the TP Link mesh units.

Thoughts and other suggestions, please?

I am probably worried for nothing, but I am expecting a problem when I rearrange my house.

I have Cox cable and internet, and it comes into the house on the west side. I am going to move my home office to the east end of the house.

I was looking at this if I have a problem:

WiFi Extender Repeater for 2.4 and 5G 1200Mbps WiFi Signal Booster Amplifier with 4 External Antennas WiFi Range Extender with Router/AP/Repeater Mode

Or, if I do experience a problem should I go to the Cox Cable store FIRST before being so indepnendent?

Any comments, suggestions?

Install a free app such as Wifi Analyzer on your smartphone. Open the app and walk around your house to actually see the signal strength in different areas. Don't buy an extender unless you actually need one. 2.4Ghz signal is quite hearty, 5Ghz not so much. This one is for Android, Apple should have something similar.

And yes, be independent. Do not go to the Cox Cable store.

Okay, but why? They sell a mesh system. It is unreasonable to suggest that they have had good results with the recommendation?

Who's mesh system do they sell? I thought you were referring to like renting a wifeless modem from them.
Still... is the picking that slim in Sun City that you don't have an actual retailer to go to? We have Cox cable in this area, I don't know of any stores.. and who is that loyal... to a cable company that you would go there before a BestBuy or a Target\Walmart?

If Cox sells a mesh system, if it's price-competitive with Amazon or Best Buy, and if they take returns painlessly if it doesn't work for you then I don't see the problem.

But if they charge full retail with the excuse that they help you with support, well, I would go elsewhere because they really don't support anything well other than their infrastructure.

I'm also curious as to which mesh system they sell.

It's $136 for 3 Panoramic Pods. Unfortunately they don't list a manufacturer.
