As a gigabit customer I just learned that I get Free HBOMax (not available on Amazon or Roku platforms yet). I was paying for HBO on Hulu so this will now save me $$ a month.
Just killed HBO on Hulu. Was paying $15 a month and don’t really care about a unified program grid inside Hulu. And already got the app loaded on Apple TV.
There is no free lunch, you'll pay for it one way or the other down the road. Largest problem I see with this is if the ISP's are able to consolidate a lot of these services into their services especially if they own the content service. You're back to square one like you have with cable TV and minimal competition.
If you have Comcast internet only you can login in to their streaming services. You get NBC shows for "free" and some other crap. You also have access to the free previews for HBO and other channels when they are running them on regular cable TV.

No, this is actually FREE. This is one reason ATT bought HBO. Now they give HBO to the ATT customers, but only the ones paying for the higher speeds, and this does 2 things: strengthens your relationship with ATT. You fall in love with HBO. Now you have less incentive to switch to Verizon. Also if you're already on ATT but NOT on the 1000 plan, maybe you upgrade to it. ATT makes more money that way.
It's every bit as free as TMobile offering free Netflix to it's high tier customers.
I think you are missing the point. It may not be itemized on your bill but that doesn't mean it isn't included in your bill.
Then that would mean your bill would go up. It really is free to existing customers, Coalman. Really and truly free. If you are paying for the MOST expensive tier they offer, the Unlimited Elite package, your bill is the same it's always been: $85.
So if you're sitting on the Extra Tier at $75... you can upgrade to Elite for $10 and get HBO max. That's what ATT is hoping to happen. Both companies are owned by ATT so it costs them literally $0 to give it away in the hopes of attracting more people to that tier and creating brand loyalty.
In my case I was paying $80 a month last month for gigabit internet. I'll be paying $80 next month.
Now it's possible they're moving things around internally - say allocating $5 to HBO Max and $75 to the rest - but that's not visible to me, at least yet.
What it also does is tie into their (horrible) AT&T TV plans. So if you're on the highest tier you get great internet, no caps and the opportunity to more easily cut the cord if you like HBO Max.
