It seems like all social networking has grown tremendously in popularity, but I feel like the usefulness of Twitter is redundant all things considered, and the only people I know who have one are much older than I am. Therefore, I've come to the conclusion that Twitter is oriented towards the 40+ audience.
A friend made a good analogy to Twitter by identifying it's lack of features as being what drives older people to the service...because they can navigate and take advantage of it without feeling confused or left out. Another good point he made was that some people create Twitter accounts so that they might feel "important" and "in" to the people who care to follow them.

Twitter was developed a few years ago as a way to send mass text messages to a list of friends without having to include their phone numbers each time you did so. Basically, it was an app that would automatically send your text message to everyone on a previously created list. That is why it is so basic. And seeing how it is so popular now I seriously doubt that it will change much in the future.

I don't use Twitter, and most of the folks I know who use it are much younger than I am (mostly in their 30's).
The average age of users of Twitter has gone up, but if you're looking for the Web 2.0 service that has had a very dramatic increase in the age of its users lately, that would be Facebook.

Hmmmm.....Everybody will be "old people" someday. Life is short
so slow down and enjoy the ride. (P.S. I'm 63 and ride has been
great!)
I don't use Twitter. I am over 50. I find the idea of sending everyone the same message very impersonal. I can see it being used for business, but for friends? Naw.
