As well as have a large number of followers on twitter?

Do you get a prize or something?

People make a big deal out of it, I wonder why.

Nope, the number below the video box just gets bigger and bigger. The only reason people make a big deal out of it is because the more views their video recieves, the more circulation it will have got and thus the more popular it is. They don't get anything material at the end though.

It simply strokes the ego of those that feel that it is somehow important.

well, with youtube, if you get a ton of hits, it can go "viral" and even snag national attention. just look at what happened w/ the "United Breaks Guitars" youtube video. for some people, success on youtube can seep into other areas (w/ the above example, the guy is likely getting more hits on his personal website). youtube can make celebrities out of common people (did anyone even know who Chris Crocker was before he made that infamous "leave Britney ALONE!" youtube rant?)

as for Twitter, I really don't understand that thing! I think the people who brag about how many followers they have are the same who brag about the number of Facebook friends they have

While you won't get anything directly from youtube or twitter or any other social networking site, your fame can create other opportunities. Brands or companies might want to associate with you. If you have a blog or website it might deliver traffic to your site and advertisers might want to pay you to have their ads on your site since so many visitors would be viewing them in one place. Depending what makes you famous, maybe you'll get a nice job offer from someone. So point is you might get the opportunity to indirectly benefit.

Or you might wake up to find a 20 pound solid gold meteorite has crashed through your roof and landed in your bed.

It could happen

lol, this reminds me of the South Park episode when the kids made a viral video. They thought they were going to get paid big money.

And don't forget about Susan Boyle getting 20,000,000 hits on Utube. Even though she placed 2nd, her 20,000,000 made her the real winner. Now she will be famous for a lonnnnngggg time. And a bank account to prove it.
