Hi,

I just got another email SPAM "response" to a Craigslist ad that I posted.

Normally, I do a whois lookup if there's a website included and report the idiot who spammed me. But for this email from "idek.net" ***NOTE DO NOT GO TO THAT ADDRESS, it was included in the spam as a link.

I did a whois lookup and I got what seems to be BOGUS information for the registrar:
...
domain: idek.net
created: 09-Aug-2005
last-changed: 27-May-2009
registration-expiration: 09-Aug-2010 ...

registrant-firstname: Oneandone
registrant-lastname: Private Registration
registrant-organization: 1&1 Internet, Inc. - http://1and1.com/contact
registrant-street1: 701 Lee Road, Suite 300
registrant-street2: ATTN: idek.net
registrant-pcode: 19087
registrant-state: PA
registrant-city: Chesterbrook
registrant-ccode: US
registrant-phone: +1.8772064254
registrant-email: proxy1449415@1and1-private-registration.com
...

WTF Has anyone seen this before?

I'm going to try to report them to the FBI's SPAM unit, but the contact info doesn't look kosher.

There's not actually any law or anything that I'm aware of that forces people to register a domain with correct and accurate identifying information.

Really? When I had "obfuscated" the info for my domain, my registrar contacted me to tell me that I was required to have accurate contact information. Anyway this is not good. Other than a whois lookup, is there another way to find out the registrar for a particular site?

1. "Required" isn't always what it's cracked up to be.

2. Short of getting a court order and backtracking the guy through his IP train... not really.

It's a private registration.

There are companies that do 'proxy' registration for website owners to keep the registration private. The proxy company's information shows up on whois instead of the real registrant.

Wow, that is terrible. I mean it's kind of good if you're a "spammer" but otherwise it sucks... I am totally against excessive regulation, but when I see jerks doing stuff like this it makes me feel that there should be some sort of law against being a creep. I mean, it would be okay to hide your information...unless you're a spammer with what is probably a "phishing" or porn website... Grrrrr. I'm going to just report the proxy server then, let the FBI deal with them.

It depends on which TLD your domain is in. .US domains are no longer allowed to be registered privately.

It's not "Law" but you can lose the domain if you do not have accurate information. You can report bad whois here:

ICANN | Whois Data Problem Report

As already mentioned though companies will register names for you.

Thanks so MUCH, theCoalMan! I just reported those creeps. I used to LOVE the internet and I hate hate hate the jerks who have made email and the internet a dangerous place to be. I hope they revoke that jerk's URL and do not refund his money. Sending email from a fake address, sending unsolicited business email etc. is illegal in my state.
