What THE #### is with this sudden deluge of teeth whitening ads on the 'net?? These obnoxious things - with their vulgar, creepy mouths full of braces or gaping back at me like something out of a horror flick - are EVERYWHERE on the 'net nowdays. It's gotten so bad I've started avoiding the sites they are most prevelent or shrinking the window down to block them.
Are there really that many people out there desperate for whiter teeth, or is this yet another example of flawed, lame marketing research??
I haven't seen a popup ad in a long long time, at least on systems I control the security on. I don't use IE, I do use MVPS hosts file, openDNS filtering, and ZoneAlarm ES.
I tried Chrome for the first time yesterday; I've been using Firefox for years. First thing I noticed was how many ads there were on the sites I frequent. With FF and Adblock, I don't think I've seen an ad in years . . .

I started using Flock at home not so long ago and noticed the same thing. I've finally got AdBlock on it now, though. I am forced to use IE at work so I have gotten used to just ignoring ads mostly.
OP, use Firefox with AdBlock and NoScripts and you will not see these ads anymore.
I think I've seen the same ads the OP is referring to, and one thing to consider is that I think a lot of them are being hard-coded right into the page, rather than being used as pop-ups. I'm using FF and ZA with all the goodies and the ads are still there.
Right, these are not pop-ups, they are "built into" the page (although many are on a rotating basis ie sometimes if you hit refresh it will switch to another ad). Just seems weird....
I'm kind of out of the loop when it comes to Net advertising, but I do know a while back the big thing was rotating ads. So yeah, that's what we're seeing.
Still annoying, though - I agree.
