My roofer is a general contractor and wants me to design a website for him in exchange for work around my place. I've just designed my first site- not html, but not templates. He's seen mine and really likes it.

Anyway, what would a fair barter be for a five page site? Has anyone ever negotiated something like this? Where to begin?

Generally when I barter services I try to trade labor as equal. And then we just owe each other for parts (at cost). If there is disparity between the amount of labor, I and the people I trade with go for anywhere between a 30 to 50% labor rate discount.

The big question really is, "What do you think it's worth?" A five page website may not be worth an equal trade on the labor of a reroof, but it might be worth half off that labor. It really depends on how much work went into it.

You might consider discounting your labor pretty deep if it looks like it will develop into an ongoing trade. If it's a one-off, maybe not.

if i could make a suggestion . . .

you give him a price for your services, and he gives you a price. pay each other what it costs for your services. someone always walks away from one of these deals feeling like they got the short end.

There are some great advantages to bartering without exchanging money. One of the biggest and best is the, erm, "tax break" it entails. Also, if you're just starting out and want to build a reputation, bartering services can get clients and referrals in your portfolio easier than cash or credit customers. There's also a rapport that gets built up. It establishes a trade relationship that is beneficial and can get you into a network of bartering with people.

It's not for everyone, but barter can certainly be worth it.

One example - not meant to gospel, but an idea of the cost of a web site. Go to Custom Web Design under Build it for me, and note the cost plus the design fee.

Thanks everyone. He reroofed two roofs for me a couple of years ago. I ran into his the other day and we were talking about times being slow. He was saying that he is cutting back on yellow page advertising and I told him that I thought the internet was the way to go. Then told him about my site and he asked if I could look at his. He was the one who suggested we could work a trade.

As has been suggested, I'll do some research and see what the going rate is. Then will give him a list of four projects and ask him if he would want to trade for any of them.

I guess the barter thing has been going on since the beginning of time, but it seems to be growing now that folks have more time than money.

Thanks again.
