So, on google finance, marketwatch, stockcharts.com, etc... just tracking some things...

Noticed this phenomenon across all sites... with all stocks

Example:
AAPL, 8/5/2011
open $380.44
close $373.62

Sites list the daily performance as -0.99%...

Given those opening and closing numbers that's -1.8% by my math...

Another example:
GOOG, 8/5/2011
open $582.55
close $579.04

Performance is listed as +0.26%.... last time I checked, if something finishes lower than when it started, it's negative... ????

What kind of noob error am I making here?

I could be wrong, but I believe the close price is actually compared to the previous days close price, not the current days opening price. Because of after hours trading or dividend adjustments, stocks can open at a different price than they closed at the previous day.

Thanks, that jives... I'm used to medium to longer term holds, so never paid that close attention to those daily numbers.

The opening price is 9:30am and the closing price is 4pm.

Look at a 5 day chart of Apple or Google. Look at the 4pm close compared to the next day's opening price. You'll see they are not at the same price. They may open exactly as they closed, or open lower, or open higher. If they open lower, on the chart you'll see "the gap lower." If they open higher than the previous day's close, you will see a gap down.

There is something called Beta. If your stock has a beta of 1.0 it means if the market goes up 3% your stock will go up 3%.
The highly volatile stocks have a high beta, meaning they will go up or down faster. A stock with a Beta of 1.9 is very volatile.

I own Google and here is your .26%
Look at Google again.
You see it says:
Closed Thursday at 577.52
Opened at 582.54
Closed 579.04 or UP $1.52 (579.04 - 577.52) = 0.26%.
The performance is from close to close as treasurekidd noted.
