Lots of people out there, the ones I hear on the radio are far away from me (I am in MD/DC area).

Any good recommendations? I have a guy from Principal who keeps calling me but my guess is that they will just put me in load mutual funds and recommend life insurance. I am interested in an actually savvy investor.

Thoughts?

This will take some work. The guys who really do what you want are only open to accredited investors.

Look for someone who is a fiduciary, not someone who is looking to sell you products.

Edelman Financial is one of the largest fee-based firms in the country and is based in the DC area with multiple offices and advisors around here

It depends on how much you have in investable assets. My suggestion would to seek a fee only based planner, one that earns a hourly or flat fee to give you advice. You are exactly correct to be skeptical of the rep at Principle that he would "sell" you product much the same as many of these large firms such as AXA, Jones & so forth. You will want someone that benefits from your success.

Any financial advisor would probably recommend that you invest in mutual funds and buy life insurance. What in particular are you looking for? You said "savvy investor". Does that imply you're looking for investment advice rather than general financial advice?
