Two years ago my son moved from California to London for a "permanent" job. Recently he tried to do a change of address on his US IRA account. The current custodian told him that they can't/won't handle the account unless he is physically resident in US. Even a US mailing address (mine) would not work. They told him (and I called them also to confirm) his only choice was to close/transfer/rollover the account to a new custodian.
Is this true of all US custodians ?? Even the large ones like Fidelity, Vanguard, Price, etc ??
Any advice, direction, or experience is appreciated.
BTW his checking and savings bank in CA had no problem keeping accounts open using his London address.
