The qusetion is whether the DJIA and SP are UP or DOWN this year. Well, they are UP and they are DOWN both. In pure DOLLAR terms the markets are up this year. But if you take into acount the devaluation of the dollar and use the gold standard, they are down this year! So I guess it depends...

That's good news, but I'm curious how you define "way up" in percentages, which is an easy way to compare things. My investment portfolio will finish this year up by 15 to 16 percent, or about double the S+P or DJIA. Is that "way up"? It's OK, but a couple of months ago I was up over 20 percent so I'm 5 points below the high water mark. Hang on, looks like 2008 might be a rough ride, hard to say what will happen. Good luck and play your cards carefully.
A few stocks (GOOG, MSFT, RIMM, BA, INTC, and AAPPL) are holding up the averages. They tend to be held in each of the major averages. If you look at the Value Line Geometric Average (XVG) which weights all 1700 stocks equally regardless of market capitalization, it's down 3 percent for the past year and is lagging those capitalization-weighted indexes by 10 percentage points.
