If you had 100 shares of C (that you bought at 8.80) what would you do with them? I have read that C may try and sell itself, or break apart into separate companies. I am trying to determine if I should sell now and lose nearly half my investment, or hold and hope for the best.

That is a big red flag in my mind, any company looking for a buyer nowadays is probably not in a good position to go on by themselves. Who really knows what may happen, I was warning about National City for a long time, but they did eventually get bought out by PNC. That being said there is no guarantee that you would get a good amount back on a sale, everyone is looking for a bargain nowadays, including major companies. Wells Fargo bought out Wachovia for only $6/share (it was a share exchange I think it is currently worth $4/share), they were trading at $10 before that day, $20 the week before that, $15-20 for a while before that. If you are okay with possibly losing 90% on a firesale, or a Bear Stearns like sale, you can gamble it. But otherwise I would sell sometime when good news is around, or maybe now.

What is your views on buying city at 3 or 3.50 a share. If I bought a thousand shares do you think I have the chance of losing most of it, or may it possibly double.

I think if I had $3.5K and I wanted to double it I'd go to Atlantic City and sit down at the blackjack table...

The volatility in the market is exactly what is driving investors out. As they leave the prices continue to rollercoater downwards.

Well I held on to the C stock. Hoping for some upbeat news early next week so that I can maybe sell it with a smaller loss.

If Citi can survive through December I think you'll see it go up handsomly. The problem is that they very well might not make it that far.

Depends on how bad you need the money. Id hold it for a couple years...granted I am also a buyer of distressed stocks. GRA, GE, BAC, F, NVDA, FCX. I have been sitting on some cash and am taking small positions.

You can sell it and use the tax write off. Then if you really want buy it back later. C also will not be paying a dividend.

I bought 50 shares of C at $3.73 shortly before the multi-billion aid package was released. I am happy with my position and prepared to hold long-term. My goals are 35 years down the road so I think it's great that I can get into blue-chip companies at bargain-basement prices.
