I wouldn't let that be a benchmark of what stores are or are not in Iowa City. You should be fine, most large chain stores are in the Iowa City area. Especially after Coral Ridge Mall opened 12 years ago with their 6 anchors, 110 stores and all that development that feeds off a large mall, Bennigans, Chili's, Khols, Pier One, etc. etc.
Well, UO specifically caters to the hipsters, assuming that's the look s/he is after.

Iowa City and the surrounding areas are not really high end markets. Most people who lives in these areas are Farmers and Truck Drivers who usually shop at Orschelin's or something similar. This area is definitely not high dollar city life although there is plenty to do in the area as well as the older areas within an hours drive like the Amana's. Lots of little tucked away shops as well, just have to know who to ask to find these little gems. We are hoping to get back to Muscatine very soon and settle in and stay there. NO more moving after that..... (famous last words)
