I'm moving to the Iowa City area soon from Louisiana, and one thing I'm excited about is getting to buy a whole or half cow, have it butchered, and end up with a freezer full of meat! I've tried looking it up on google, and found a good bit about specialty/grass fed/etc. cows and their premium price. Anyone from the area know the nuts and bolts of how to just get your good ole' corn fed farm cow somewhere near Iowa City? How much should I expect a whole/half/quarter cow to set me back?

On a semi related note, do the coops in Iowa City/Coralville carry local meat? If so, is it good and a decent price? Many thanks!

I've never done the whole- or half-cow thing, so I don't know all the in's and out's, but you might try calling some of the local butcher shops and just ask them. Bud's Custom Meats in Riverside might be one place to try calling. If they don't have what you want, there's a good chance they can point you in the right direction.

Definitely check out the Iowa City Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings as well. I know there are at least a couple of local meat places that set up booths there. I've gotten elk and lamb from the farmer's market and always been pleased, but never gotten beef. Also check into the Amana Smokehouse and Meat Shop.

For co-ops, you'll want to check out New Pioneer Coop (newpi.coop) in both Iowa City (original) and Coralville (newer and larger). It looks like they carry lots of local meats: Meat and Seafood Its a little pricey for me to shop there regularly, but their meat, cheese, and dessert counters will make you hungry in no time flat.

Forgive me, I thought this thread was a joke until I actually read it. Sorry, please disregard the city folk here posting this comment.

I can't give you any specifics about the food coop there, but I'm sure they do carry local meat.

I'd start here to get a cow:
