"Reg. the food expenses, as I will be buying ONLY Indian veg. stuffs like rice, dal, vegetables etc only (not the frozen items, which are costlier) only.If the price is (approx) same as in NJ, I believe 175-200$ will be enough to buy Indian groceries for a month."

Milk or anything to drink besides water, or bread, cereals, etc? Hard to believe anyone can feed a family on much of anything for $200 unless they are going to severly limit the diet. But, hey, if it works...

I have heard of people that moved to Iowa City and explain how surprised they are in that they rarely have to use their car. However these are people that stay closer to the Iowa City downtown area which is pedestrian friendly. Do I think Iowa City-Coralville have a decent bus system? Yes. But I would definitely suggest to own a car, as it will be a great resource. Staying in Coralville and using the bus system will allow you to complete your basic errands and commute to work but it is not established well for anything more.

As for cost of living, Coralville cost of living is less expensive than Iowa City. Though the Iowa City metro is considered one of the most expensive cities in Iowa. This is likely influenced by the University of Iowa presence.

Can't find ANYTHING where we are on the used car lots for under about $8,000, not even older models with high mileage.

montanamom, a quick search of cars.com found me ~60 cars within 30 miles of Iowa City for less than $2500. Nothing real fancy, of course, but things like a little Nissan Sentra with high miles for ~$2,000 would suffice for what most of us here are recommending for just getting around Iowa City.
