Hello, my boyfriend and I are considering moving to Iowa City. He would be working on his PhD and I would be working downtown. We are both in our mid to late 20s and we don't have kids (yet). I'm curious where we should be looking to rent an apartment/house. We are too old to hang out at the college bars all the time but we still like to be social and go out. I would really enjoy a neighborhood by a park/greenspace and maybe some little local shops/restaurants/bars. Is there a neighborhood like this in Iowa City? I would really appreciate some info! Thanks!

Just as an FYI - many "older" people like yourself (haha) hang out at the college bars. There are of course some bars downtown that are pretty much undergrads only, but there are also some bars that are quieter and that grad students your age frequent (Deadwood comes to mind). There are also some nicer, upscale restaurants downtown now that aren't the loud, young crowd.

I'm not good at remember exact street names anymore, but there are PLENTY of grad students that live within walking distance to campus. You can live in a rental home (triplex type thing) near campus that is quieter but still easy to walk from. I'm thinking back around Dodge Street? Hopefully someone will have better info, but don't think that you have to be miles from campus to find a quiet, more adult area.
