Hello,

I am new to Iowa City and I am looking for a ski resort to take my family to. Seems like Sundown Mountain in Dubuque, IA and Snow Star in Andalusia, Il are the two closest ones.

Any recommendation? Thanks! Happy Holidays, everyone!!

There's Fun Valley about an hour away from Iowa City in Montezuma, IA. Sundown Mountain is the best little ski place in Iowa though.

For a weekend trip, Afton Alps near the Minnesota Twin Cities is probably the largest and best ski resort in the Midwest.

If you don't mind a touch of a drive, you can head to Sleepy Hollow in east Des Moines by the fair grounds. Should be about an hour and a half drive from you. Not really a resort but it's decent. There is also a place in Boone, Iowa called Seven Oaks.. About 2 and half hours from you.

There is also Chesnut Mountain in Galena Illinois, almost across the river from Dubuque.

This would be my recommendation over Snow Star or Sundown.

There are a few options depending on how experienced your family is in skiing. If you are average skiers I recommend Sundown. Chestnut is smaller but the hills are are steeper.

Does Chestunt get extremely crowded on weekends or is it still pretty good skiing most of the time?

Looks like the owners of Fun Valley in Montezuma have shut the place down and have consolidated their operations at Seven Oaks in Boone. No more skiing at Fun Valley...
