Finally coming to Iowa City this week. We are going to interview and tour homes. Sat. we want to go to a neighborhood type cafe for breakfast. Any suggestions? We mostly want to get a feel for the community so that takes precedence over taste

Hamburg Inn is the semi-famous option (popular place for politicians to stop when they are passing through grubbing for votes):

Hamburg Inn

I heard good things about Bluebird Diner, but never made it there myself:

Breakfast » The Bluebird Diner - Iowa City, IA

Both of those are in or near downtown Iowa City.

My personal favorite is the Kalona Family Restaurant down in Kalona. Not what you are looking for on this trip, since it is not in Iowa City, but worth a 15 minute drive on a Sunday morning if you end up moving there.

Default Blue Bird Diner

The Blue Bird Diner is great! Would highly recommend. Popular and fun place. Great hamburgers.

I'd go with Hamburg. It's a great old place with good food, right near downtown.

Lou Henri's on Iowa Ave is a nice little place, if you can't get in to the Hamburg. Especially in the summer--you can sit outside and have breakfast. Of course, that doesn't help this time of year.

I've never been to the Bluebird, but I've heard good things about there too.

Huh, 6 years in Iowa City and I never heard of that place! It looks great from the pictures on yelp. Just on a corner I never went by. Might have to check it out next time I'm back (going down to Iowa City this weekend, actually, so maybe I'll see danielle_pal there without even knowing it!).

I don't know about atmosphere, but Midtown over on Scott Ct just off Hwy 1 does a nice breakfast.

It's hard to miss! We never would have gone if the Hamburg wasn't always so packed.

I had some great food in Iowa surprisingly! We ate at The Chef's Table, 126, Josephs steak house and The Hamburg. We also got some coffee at a Iowa chain that pours water over your ground beans... forgot the name. It was interesting!
