Hi friends,

I know FREE and University of Iowa campus don't go together often, but i'm looking for anything that you may know of. I'm living in Iowa City this summer, and would like to bring my car up for the summer. My dilemma is not having to pay outrageous rates to park my car. If you know of any places that you are able to park your car for free, without having to move it every other day. Also, if you could be so kind to limit it to walking distance of downtown Iowa City, that would be awesome (< 3 miles).

The only place that I know of that offered free parking was Bj'aysville north of the Mayflower Dorm, but I believe they put no parking signs there after the 09'-10' school year.

Ellis Avenue is a one-block street right up the hill from Hancher (or where Hancher used to be?) that has open parking on one side of the street. Can be difficult to get a spot during work hours, but not so bad in the evenings. Probably wouldn't want to leave a car there for weeks without moving it, though.

Two other options, considering it sounds like you don't need the car for day-to-day use (based on your <3 miles away criteria):

a) The UI long-term storage lot out by the rec fields and West High. A ways away, but presumably the Cambuses run out there?

b) Craigslist. I posted an ad once looking for temporary parking near the hospital and got a couple offers that weren't too bad. I'm sure it would be even cheaper if you are looking out a block or two.

There is some free street parking close to campus that won't require you to move your car everyday. Usually these spots are taken so you'd have to do some searching, but it's probably easier to park there during the summer.

Some of the spots: Washington st between Gilbert and Governor; Iowa Ave between Gilbert and Governor; possibly College st around the same area. Capitol, Clinton and Dubuque south of Burlington also had free street parking. My last year at Iowa in the Spring of 09 I always parked on Capitol between Prentiss and Lafayette. The only issue I had was a ding on the back of my car. I apologize if the rules have changed since then (I parked for free on Capitol this Fall). I also always drove my car at least once every 5 days.
