My mother-in-law will retire soon. My husband and I would like to take her to a nice dinner in Iowa City area including Coralvile, North Liberty, Cedar Rapids to celebrate her retirement. We moved back to Iowa a half year ago and don't know much about new restaurants and good restaurants. I would appreciate if anybody could let us know good restaurants that has nice atmosphere and is quiet for our mother's retirement celebration dinner. Thank you.

Chef's Table in Iowa City is wonderful. Excellent food, very nice atmosphere. A little pricey but well worth it.

I've heard Monica's is nice, though I haven't been there yet. It's supposed to be casual dining, though, so may not be exactly what you're looking for.

I think the Power Company is a great place to go for a special occasion.

Monica's is good. I wouldn't say its quite casual dining, but not black-tie either. Really a nice atmosphere and good food. Iowa River Power Company is a good suggestion, too. Probably the most unique settings in town. The restaurant side of Blackstone Grill is a pretty good option, too, although maybe not quite the atmosphere that you want.

If you don't mind driving just a little ways, the Lincoln Cafe in Mt. Vernon is, as far as I'm concerned, the best food in the region. A little pricey, but probably no worse than the Power Company.

Thanks so much everybody. I'm more towards Chef's Table type of restaurant for once in her life event. It looks really good. It is pricey but it's fine as long as food, atmosphere and service worth the price.
Iowa River Power and Lincoln Cafe look great, too.
We might also go to Monica's for my husband's birthday this weekend
If there's any other places that you would recommend, I would appreciate it if you could let me know.
Thanks again!

Sounds like a good plan. I didn't make it to Chef's Table before I moved away, but heard good things about it.

There are a ton of other options around downtown: One-Twenty-Six and The Hearth, Devotay, Graze, and Linn Street Cafe all have great reputations. If you like ethnic food, Thai Spice is fantastic (Thai Flavors is good, too, but Thai Spice is my favorite). People say Iowa City has remarkably good sushi for being about as far from an ocean as you can get, although I'm not a big sushi person, myself. I'm sure I'm forgetting some great options, too.

If you need breakfast while you are there, my recommendation would be to drive down to Kalona for the Kalona Family Restaurant...low priced, good old-fashioned breakfast food. Blue Bird Diner is supposed to be good as well.

I hope you enjoy Chef's Table. Would enjoy hearing what you think of it.

Vino's in Cedar Rapids is good too, although not quite as nice an environment as the Chef's Table.

I haven't been to the Lincoln Cafe or Monica's, but will have to check them out. It's nice to hear everyone's suggestions.
