The amount of money he will save by staying outside the IC area is well worth it.

While it is slightly more expensive, I disagree that it is far outside the norm compared to larger cities. Even places like Tiffin probably have some very expensive real estate. If anything I see real estate prices going up for those who are looking for a specific type of school experience for their child, but must stay close to the IC area for work reasons.

Just editing my post after googling Tiffin...yep some very overpriced real estate there.

Define "long commute." There are (or were while I was browsing) tons of lovely homes for $150k and below in cities surrounding Iowa City. Please see it's sister cities (which have next to no commute) Coralville, and North Liberty. The homes in Coralville tend to be newer, especially more so than IC homes. Better neighborhoods AND newer, cheaper housing? How can you NOT sign on to that?

It's just never a good idea to live in the city. You can only lose.
